What is the “Missing Middle”?

Missing Middle housing refers to a lack of medium-density housing. The term describes an urban planning phenomenon where zoning regulations favor social and racial separation and car-dependent suburban sprawl.

There are solutions along a spectrum of affordability to address the mismatch between the available housing stock and shifting demographics.

What is the "Economic" Missing Middle?

The economic missing middle describes households earning approximately 60–80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). These individuals and families often earn too much to qualify for housing subsidies but not enough to afford market-rate rents, placing them in a critical gap within the housing system.
